As part as the Core Labs outreach program to engage with the KAUST community, the Central Workshops recently hosted an exciting VIP tour from Ms. Kathy’s class at The KAUST School. The 5- and 6-year-olds took a field trip to the glassblowing facility to connect their classroom unit of inquiry on materials to a real-world application. The kids learned about how glass is made and molded and were able to see a glassblowing demonstration by the experts.
The Central Workshops include quite a bit of heavy machinery so a major concern was placed on the safety of the children while touring the facility. To ensure their safety, we fabricated a standing bench for them to observe the glassblowing process by taking turns looking through a safety window near the glassblowers.
The children shared many sophisticated questions with glassblower Neil Davison – covering topics such as where glass comes from, how it is recycled, how glassblowing works, and some of the benefits and limitations of glass as a medium.
The Core Labs welcome visitors from across the community. To arrange a tour, check out the visitor information page.
