KAUST has joined the OpenPOWER Foundation, an open development community based on POWER microprocessor architecture. This membership will enable the Supercomputing Core Lab to be in close contact with its members and technologies, resulting in better hardware, software and service for our users.

KAUST joins a growing roster of technology organizations working collaboratively to build advanced server, networking, storage and acceleration technology as well as industry leading open source software aimed at delivering more choice, control and flexibility to developers of next-generation, hyperscale and cloud data centers. The group makes POWER hardware and software available to open development for the first time, as well as making POWER intellectual property licensable to others, greatly expanding the ecosystem of innovators on the platform.

“KAUST faculty, staff and students now can enjoy the OpenPOWER Foundation's collaboration environment,” said Habeeb Khan, system administrator of Supercomputing Core Lab. Registered members have access to discussion boards, secure document repositories, distribution lists and much more. They can also participate in existing OpenPOWER workgroups and work collaboratively towards a common goal. For example, they can lead and contribute to OpenPOWER projects, suggest potential new workgroup topics, build relationships and network with peers.
