Advanced techniques for custom and routine chemical analysis
The Analytical Chemistry Core Lab provides expert analytical services to the KAUST research community on a wide range of advanced analytical instruments. The 1000-square-meter facility includes a chromatography/mass spectroscopy lab, a trace metals analysis lab, a wet chemistry lab, a surface analysis lab and a molecular spectroscopy lab.
The laboratory includes facilities for chromatography/mass spectroscopy, trace metals analysis, wet chemistry, surface analysis and molecular spectroscopy.
The surface analysis facility specializes in the determination of surface area, particle size, pore size distribution and pore volume of porous solid materials as well as surface properties of liquids.
The molecular spectroscopy facility is equipped with analytical instruments for performing both qualitative and quantitative analysis of chemical materials based on the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with matter.
The wet chemistry facility is equipped with analytical instruments for detecting and measuring a wide range of organic and inorganic compounds. Typical matrices in this section include drinking water, processed water, wastewater, brine, and seawater. Analytes range from elements to nutrients, various organic and inorganic ions and more.
Equipped with best-in-class liquid and gas chromatography instruments connected to a range of selective and universal detectors, researchers in the chromatography facility are able to separate and detect a wide range of organic compounds for both qualitative and quantitative analysis.
Typical analyses in this section include the determination of accurate mass of small organic compounds using high resolution and high accuracy mass spectrometry, determination of polymer molecular weight averages and distribution using size exclusion chromatography, determination of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds in liquid and solid matrices using gas chromatographic techniques, among others.
