The mission of the Imaging and Characterization Core Lab is to provide state-of-the-art imaging and characterization facilities and technological expertise to facilitate high-quality education and high-impact research and discovery.
We provide lab users with training so they can use the lab facilities independently for their research and discovery. When independent-use isn't possible, we collaborate or provide full-service on projects where appropriate. Our staff also conducts method development to improve the performance and capabilities of equipment to help our users get the most out the facility.

We provide regular training during the academic year. Training events cover all of the techniques available in the lab, including electron microscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, surface analysis, optical microscopy, and physical characterization. The lab also organizes workshops focusing on different technical areas. These events are open to the entire KAUST academic community, KAUST industrial partners and Saudi academic institutions.
Qualified users are enabled to use the facilities or equipment of the lab with minimal support from our staff. Independent users must be trained and qualified to access and operate the relevant resources.
When a project involves advanced techniques, our lab staff will work jointly with users to develop a tailor-made experiment plan to achieve their research objectives.
While we strive to provide training and support so our users can independently utilize our instruments and facilities, we are available to discuss projects where Core Lab staff will perform the work on your behalf. Full-service starts from a clearly defined proposal and technical specifications, consulting the Imaging and Characterization Core Lab for a feasibility assessment and approval.
