  • Electron microscopy

    The electron microscopy facility is equipped with 14 cutting-edge electron microscopes, which provide a wide-spectrum of advanced imaging and characterization capabilities. Our staff provide training from basic to advanced levels to users, consult users on experimental plans, conduct collaborative research projects and develop new methodologies to solve challenging problems.


    Our staff specializes in a wide range of techniques:

    • Ultra-high spatial resolution TEM/STEM/SEM imaging
    • Atomically resolved chemical analysis with EDS and EELS
    • Ultra-high energy resolution EELS analysis of chemical states, band structure, and surface plasmon
    • Cryo TEM and SEM
    • Ultra beam sensitive materials high-resolution imaging
    • Electron tomography
    • Large volume 3D imaging with SEM and FIB
    • Electron crystallography
    • Highly time-resolved in-situ TEM
  • NMR spectroscopy

    The NMR group specializes in advanced solution-state and solid-state applications in organic and inorganic materials and biological samples. These include:

    • One-dimensional, multi-dimensional, and dynamic nuclear polarization NMR spectroscopy for obtaining atomic resolution information of the structure, dynamics, and interactions of small and large molecules
    • Applications of electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy for determining radical species in a sample
    • Magnetic resonance imaging NMR for macroscopic images
  • Surface science

    Surface science techniques deal with the property of surfaces and sub-surfaces up to several nanometers from the surface. This facility has expertise in:

    • X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, which enables us to probe the surface chemical composition, chemical states and the composition distribution along the depth through depth profiling
    • Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS)
    • Atomic force microscopy, which reveals the surface topography information and physical properties at sub-nanometer scale
  • Optical microscopy

    The optical microscopy team specializes in biological imaging and material sample characterization with expertise in:

    • Cell culturing, staining, and tissue processing
    • 2D, 3D and 4D imaging
    • Advanced live cell imaging
    • Image processing
    • Surface topography inspection, grain size and porosity analysis
    • Dynamic process imaging
    • Physical characterization
  • Physical characterization

    The physical characterization team specializes in physical property characterization, with a focus on X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and electrical characterization. Our expertise includes:

    • Phase identification of polycrystalline samples by powder X-ray diffraction
    • 3-D structure determination of single-crystal samples by single-crystal X-ray diffraction
    • Structural properties measurement of epitaxial thin film by high-resolution X-ray diffraction
    • Molecular group identification by Raman spectroscopy
    • Photoluminescence (PL) analysis for light emission position determination by Raman spectroscopy
    • Electrical probing of wafers, dice, and packaged devices
