The Greenhouse Core Lab supports plant-based research conducted at KAUST. The Greenhouse is a 1,600-square-meter facility that includes a headhouse and individually climate controlled growth rooms. The facility enables researchers to control and study plant growth, development, physiology, genetics, and molecular research using specialized growth rooms and innovative agricultural equipment.

The Greenhouse provides specialized equipment for plant research. This includes tools for stratification of seeds and vernalization of plants, facilities for salinity experiments, scanners for root and leaf morphology studies, leaf area meters, plant phenotyping tools, hydroponics, soil sterilizing tools, and other equipment necessary for Greenhouse operations.
The Greenhouse includes 18 plant growth rooms. Each room has its own independent system for controlling temperature, irrigation, photoperiod, lighting and humidity, all of which are monitored through a central Argus control system. Lighting is controlled via motorized shades for attenuating sunlight and metal halide lamps for supplementing sunlight. The above environmental factors can be controlled accurately in combination or separately. The Greenhouse also supports experiments with special plant material such as genetically modified organisms and plant pathogens.
The Greenhouse includes six biochambers with independent controls for photoperiod, temperature, and humidity for conducting small-scale experiments.
The seed conservation facility is aimed at preserving the seed stocks of plants undergoing study via KAUST research. The facility presently includes collections of barley, wheat, tomato, salicornia, arabidopsis, quinoa, thellungiella and nicotiana seeds and is maintained at 4 degrees C and 10% humidity.
